Virgin and Child (Jesus) flanked by Justinian I and Constantine I

Southwestern entrance mosaics, situated in the tympanum of the southwestern entrance, date from 944. They were rediscovered during the restorations of 1849 by Fossati. The Virgin sits on a throne without a back, her feet resting on a pedestal, embellished with precious stones. The Child Christ sits on her lap, giving His blessing and holding a scroll in His left hand. On her left side stands emperor Constantine in ceremonial attire, presenting a model of the city to Mary. The inscription next to him says : "Great emperor Constantine om the Saints". On her right side stands emperor Justinian I, offering a model of the Hagia Sophia. The medallions on both sides of the Virgin’s head carry the monograms MP and OY, an abbreviation of "Mater" and "Theou", meaning "Mother of God". Several mosaics are preserved in the southern upper gallery, an area reserved for the emperor and his court

"Now when all the people had been baptised and while Jesus after his own baptism was at prayer, heaven opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily shape, like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased".

– Luke 3:21f, which is part of today’s Gospel at Mass.

My sermon for today’s feast of the Baptism of the Lord can be read here.
