"Plastisches Relief mit naiver Darstellung der Geburt Christi im Stall, dabei Ochs und Esel, Eichenholz, ungefaßt, 1959, 43 * 60 * 10 cm, Josef Grasedieck (* 1922), seinerzeit Feldhausen (Bottrop-Kirchhellen), Gärtnermeister, erste Schnitzarbeit von Josef Grasedieck in der Sammlung des Museum Heimathaus Münsterland (Inventar-Nr. 80 – 3476).
Dieses Relief stellt eines der ersten Schnitzarbeiten des Gärtnermeisters Josef Grasedieck dar. Er stellt die Heilige Familie in einem noch recht konventionellen Bild im Stall mit Ochs und Esel dar.

"Eine Weihnachtskrippe ist eine Darstellung der Geburt Christi aus der Weihnachtsgeschichte oder anderer Szenen aus dem Leben Jesu Christi, meist durch Figuren in einer Modelllandschaft Betlehems. Die Weihnachtskrippen verbinden die Bilderwelt der Adventzeit mit dem Dreikönigsfest.
Die heutigen Weihnachtskrippen gehen auf bereits auf das Frühchristentum zurück, doch zeigten die Darstellungen der ersten Jahrhunderte nur das Jesuskind (nach dem Lukasevangelium in der Futterkrippe liegend) mit den zwei Tieren Ochs und Esel. Die Figur der Maria kam erst im Mittelalter dazu (lt. einer Mitteilung des Wiener Diözesanmuseums), der Hl. Josef sogar noch später.

The chancel of the medieval church of St Botolph’s in Cmabridge was rebuilt by Bodley in 1872. This stained glass window of the Ascension of the Lord, dates to 1886 and is in the east window above the Altar.
Today, 21 May 2009, is Ascension Thursday.

Mid-14th century glass from Christ Church Cathedral in Oxford. I have photoshopped this to remove the figure of a bishop that is currently positioned between the angel and Our Lady.
25 March is the Solemnity of the Annunciation, when Jesus Christ, the Word of God, took flesh in the womb of the Virgin Mary by the power of the Holy Spirit. Through her assent to the message which the angel Gabriel announced to her, Mary became the Mother of our Saviour and the gateway of our salvation.

From the time of the Fathers, the Eternal Word of God was seen to be revealed to Moses, speaking to him from the Burning Bush as the Angel of Salvation, and the One totally aflame with the Love of God.

Epiphany at the Jordan

This interesting window in Burgos Cathedral conflates the two epiphanies of the Baptism, when the Spirit descends on Christ in the form of a dove and the Father reveals Him to be His beloved Son, and the Adoration of the Magi, when the wise men from the east come to Bethlehem and adore the infant Christ.
This conflation is based on the Magnificat antiphon for the feast of the Epiphany which says: "Three wonders mark this day we celebrate: today the star led the Magi to the manger; today water was changed into wine at the wedding feast; today Christ desired to be baptized by John in the river Jordan to bring us salvation, alleluia".
In a sense, this conflation has been separated by the reformed liturgy because last week’s feast of the Epiphany only celebrates the arrival of the Magi, and this Sunday we celebrate the feast of the Baptism. The wedding at Cana has no separate feast.

Southwestern entrance mosaics, situated in the tympanum of the southwestern entrance, date from 944. They were rediscovered during the restorations of 1849 by Fossati. The Virgin sits on a throne without a back, her feet resting on a pedestal, embellished with precious stones. The Child Christ sits on her lap, giving His blessing and holding a scroll in His left hand. On her left side stands emperor Constantine in ceremonial attire, presenting a model of the city to Mary. The inscription next to him says : "Great emperor Constantine om the Saints". On her right side stands emperor Justinian I, offering a model of the Hagia Sophia. The medallions on both sides of the Virgin’s head carry the monograms MP and OY, an abbreviation of "Mater" and "Theou", meaning "Mother of God". Several mosaics are preserved in the southern upper gallery, an area reserved for the emperor and his court

Stained glass in the church of St, Mary, Theydon Bois, Essex. The picture depicts the presentation of Christ in the temple, but the words belong to the adjacent Baptism window. The windows were moved to their current position when the church was extended, and the ‘captions’ got swapped over.

When Jesus Christ began his mission on earth, he chose apostles to assist him. These apostles continued to run the church after His crucifixion and resurrection. They served as diligent missionaries, going out into the world to teach the gospel. Jesus Christ Himself worked to teach the gospel to everyone who came into his path. Sometimes people chose to approach Him, but other times He approached them. He and the apostles knew they had a message that would change lives if it were only listened to, and so they had the courage to approach people and share that message. When we love people we want them to have everything they need to make them happy and for Christians, this includes the gospel. In fact, Christians know Jesus Christ is the most important aspect of true joy. Missionary work is an act of love.
