One Lord, One Faith

"I, the prisoner in the Lord, implore you to lead a life worthy of your vocation. Bear with one another charitably, in complete selflessness, gentleness and patience. Do all you can to preserve the unity of the Spirit by the peace that binds you together. There is one Body, one Spirit, just as you were all called into one and the same hope when you were called. There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God who is Father of all, over all, through all and within all"

– Ephesians 4:1-6, which is today’s First Reading at Mass.

"When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy;

and going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh".

Today, 6 January, is the feast of the Epiphany, and this is a stained glass detail from the set of medieval windows in Fairford parish church.

Christ Resurrected 05
jesus christ focus_keyword
Image by Waiting For The Word

On the third day, Jesus Christ rose from the dead as He said. An angel at the tomb explained this to a few that visited the grave.

Some people have questioned whether the Resurrection happened. I recently heard of a man who set out to prove it didn’t. But he ended up convincing himself that it had to be true. For one thing, the followers of Christ were willing to die for it and many did. Very few people would be willing to die for a lie.

This is what sets Christianity apart: our God lives!

And another thing that sets Christianity apart from all other religions is the joyful happy music, especially on Easter morning!

Portrait of the Christ Child at age 12
jesus christ focus_keyword
Image by IronRodArt – Royce Bair (“Star Shooter”)

Portrait of Jesus Christ at 12 years old, when he would have been teaching in the temple during the feast of Passover* (Luke chapter 2). This is a circa 1910 vintage illustration. Since we are only about two weeks away from Easter, I’ve decided to share some recent restorations on an Easter theme. This image was scanned from my personal collection and the color restored (digitally remastered). I also retouched it to remove scratches, cracks, smudges and age spots. This is typically about a 3 hour process. See the complete series below.

*The celebration of Passover took place just before the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Christ, and the two holidays (Passover and Easter) have been entwined from the beginning—the word Pasch, originally meaning Passover, came to mean Easter as well.

Many think it is the sheet used to wrap Jesus up after his crucifixion, others think it was the result of an elaborate experiment by Leonardo da Vinci and many people just do not know. Anyway, Turin is the home of the famed Shroud of Turin.

Anyone remember this guy?

5 inches tall, made of plastic, had a lot of wild ideas?

I call him "JC."

He made his first appearance here, right before Easter 2004:

(make sure to read the "about link")

He’s been on hiatus, but he might just make a comeback.

I’d imagine the world needs him now more than ever.

Maybe I’ll do a photoset of his fave Fotolog adventures.

Meditations on the Passion of Christ
jesus christ focus_keyword

"Honour be to you, my Lord Jesus Christ. Fearing your passion and death, you poured forth blood from your innocent body like sweat, and still you accomplished our redemption as you desired and gave us the clearest proof of your love for all men.

Blessed may you be, my Lord Jesus Christ. After you had been led to Caiaphas, you, the judge of all men, humbly allowed yourself to be handed over to the judgement of Pilate.

Glory be to you, my Lord Jesus Christ, for the mockery you endured when you stood clothed in purple and wearing a crown of sharp thorns. With utmost endurance you allowed vicious men to spit upon your glorious face, blindfold you and beat your cheek and neck with cruellest blows.

Praise be to you, my Lord Jesus Christ: For with the greatest patience you allowed yourself like an innocent lamb to be bound to a pillar and mercilessly scourged, and then to be brought, covered with blood, before the judgement seat of Pilate to be gazed upon by all.

Honour be to you, my Lord Jesus Christ. For after your glorious body was covered with blood, you were condemned to death on the cross, you endured the pain of carrying the cross on your sacred shoulders, and you were led with curses to the place where you were to suffer. Then stripped of your garments, you allowed yourself to be nailed to the wood of the cross.

Blessed may you be, my Lord Jesus Christ. You redeemed our souls with your precious blood and most holy death, and in your mercy you led them from exile back to eternal life".

- Prayers attributed to St Bridget of Sweden, who is one of the patrons of Europe. Today is her feast day.

Jesus brought me beer in Vegas. Charged me six bucks for a pint! It was heavenly, I must admit.

Rex Mundi brought me breakfast in bed the next morning. It was free, so I don’t have a receipt with his name on it. Besides, who would be surprised to find the Devil working in Vegas?

More on the note above. Taken from www.religioustolerance.org/end_wrl6.htm

The following percentage of adults believed that the world will end with the battle of Armageddon as described in the Biblical book Revelation:

40% of American adults generally

45% of Christian adults

71% of Evangelical Protestants

28% of non-Evangelical Protestants

18% of Roman Catholics

Of those who believed that Armageddon will happen:

47% believe that the Antichrist is on earth now

45% believe that Jesus will return during their lifetime.

15% believed that Jesus’ return to earth will occur as early as the year 2000 CE.

Queen of the May
jesus christ focus_keyword

"O most august and blessed Virgin Mary! Holy Mother of God! Glorious Queen of heaven and earth! Powerful protectress of those who love thee, and unfailing advocate of all who invoke thee! Look down, I beseech thee, from thy throne of glory on thy devoted child; accept the solemn offering I present thee of this month, specially dedicated to thee, and receive my ardent, humble desire, that by my love and fervor I could worthily honor thee, who, next to God, art deserving of all honor. Receive me, O Mother of Mercy, among thy best beloved children; extend to me thy maternal tenderness and solicitude; obtain for me a place in the Heart of Jesus, and a special share in the gifts of His grace. O deign, I beseech thee, to recognize my claims on thy protection, to watch over my spiritual and temporal interests, as well as those of all who are dear to me; to infuse into my soul the spirit of Christ, and to teach me thyself to become meek, humble, charitable, patient, and submissive to the will of God.

May my heart burn with the love of thy Divine Son, and of thee, His blessed Mother, not for a month alone, but for time and eternity; may I thirst for the promotion of His honor and thine, and contribute, as far as I can, to its extension. Receive me, O Mary, the refuge of sinners! Grant me a Mother’s blessing and a Mother’s care, now, and at the hour of my death. Amen."

– Prayer to Our Lady to be said in the month of May.

My sermon for today, reflecting on the virtue of courage, and the gift of fortitude, can be read here.

St. Botolph’s, Boston
jesus christ focus_keyword

According to the Church’s website, Sir Nikolaus Pevsner described St. Botolph’s, in Boston, Lincolnshire, as ‘a giant among English parish churches’ and that ‘the Stump’ –

as it is more usually known – has always been a landmark to both seafarers and people travelling across the flat fenland that surrounds the market town. The Church itself, however, is anything but ‘stumpy’, with the nave measuring 242 feet long and the tower soaring to 272 feet high. According to Wikipedia, there are also many dimensions of the Church that correspond with dates in the calendar. The roof is supported by 12 pillars (months), the church is illuminated by 52 windows (weeks), there are 7 doors (days of the week) and there is a total of 365 steps to the top of the tower (days of the year). There are also 24 steps to the library (hours) and 60 steps to the roof (minutes and seconds).

I’m particularly happy with this photo because I had the time to be able to shoot manually. Churches are often particularly difficult buildings to capture well because of their confusing ability to have too many windows and not enough light! But, I think I’ve done it justice! :) focus_keyword

Cristo “muschiato” nei borghi del Cremonese
jesus christ focus_keyword

The great Rood of Westminster Cathedral, with Christ the King of Martyrs, with the mosaic-covered arch behind showing the Lord in Majesty, surrounded by his apostles and angels.

On this day in 1581, St Edmund Campion SJ was hung, drawn and quartered. At his death, he said: "In condemning us, you condemn all your own ancestors, all our ancient bishops and kings, all that was once the glory of England — the island of saints, and the most devoted child of the See of Peter."

May this holy martyr, and all the martyrs of England, pray for this land.

Detail of a stained glass window in St. Andrew’s church, Much Hadham, Hertfordshire. It depicts the presentation of Christ in the temple from Luke’s Gospel chapter 2 verses 27-32

"Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying,

‘Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace,

according to your word;

for my eyes have seen your salvation,

which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples,

a light for revelation to the Gentiles

and for glory to your people Israel.’"
